Alberta’s oil and gas sector has been hit hard by the oil price drop, the lack of pipeline capacity and a bevy of taxes and fees: the carbon tax, new methane regulations, and corporate and personal income tax hikes. It’s one thing when market conditions hurt the industry, it’s quite another when your own government burdens the industry to the point of making it harder to compete and attract investment. Anything that contributes to a rise in the cost of electricity could dramatically undermine the competitive position of Alberta oil and gas producers, the largest users of electricity in the province.
The Ontario example is a sobering reminder of what happens when ideology gets ahead of technology. Oil and gas producers can’t afford to see electricity prices double. We want the Alberta government to quit rolling the dice with their plan to switch away from a system that has provided us with affordable electricity for a generation.
